Slapped in the face - counting the costs of poor hygiene in nurseries
New hygiene solutions reduce child infections
Purelight Europe. London April 14th, 2009 36 million school days are lost every year in the UK through illness to children (according to research by The Hygiene Council). This has an impact on a child’s early education and causes inconvenience to working parents who need to arrange care. Highly infectious bacterial illnesses like slap cheek and conjunctivitis are notoriously prevalent in nurseries, yet the spread of these illnesses can be halved thanks to a new passive cleaning device called CleanCare from Purelight Europe.
For less than the equivalent of a child’s monthly nursery fees, a single Purelight’s CleanCare unit can quickly show a return on investment through the application of basic environmental hygiene delivering ‘whole room’ disinfection & air purification. CleanCare can reduce the number of absences caused by common illness, like stomach bugs, conjunctivitis and slapped cheek syndrome by as much as half.
“Whether you are a nursery carer or parent you will be aware of very common conditions that usually result in a child having to take a up to a week away from the nursery,” said Andrew Felton, Director, Purelight Europe. “Placing a CleanCare UV-C unit in a nursery to kill infectious bugs significantly reduces levels of illness related absenteeism.”
CleanCare uses a unique combination of carbon filters and UV light to trap and kill 98 percent of air-based virus and bacteria in a room, completely filtering and purifying the air in a room up to 250m² within 90 minutes.
“Programmes to improve hygiene in schools and nurseries have shown as much as a 56 percent reduction in absenteeism,” continued Felton. “CleanCare provides ongoing air filtering and cleaning which does not rely on young children remembering to actively maintain hygiene levels. All you need to remember is to switch it on to significantly reduce the risk of infection spreading.”
Reducing the transmission of illness not only reduces absenteeism levels amongst children; it can cut absenteeism due to illness among staff as well, saving nurseries additional cost of staff cover. Approximately seven percent of days for every staff member are lost each year through illness. Placing Purelight Cleancare units in the nursery and classroom can reduce these levels, saving the nursery and schools system millions of pounds a year.
